Some More Quotes That Are Quite Nice

"Create in places you don't know."

I think I might have heard this while I was listening to NPR today. I can't be sure. But the program was about Miles Davis, and someone was talking about how Miles completely redefined jazz in the late '50s with his album Kind of Blue. And more importantly, how he was operating in unknown areas--creative places that hadn't been discovered yet. Which is the secret to his unexpectedness, and precisely how he blew peoples' minds.

So I challenge you to do things that are nothing like you've ever seen before. Take a couple of steps into the dark, have no idea where you are creatively. Don't hang out in familiar conceptual territory. You know when you are. Don't. If you stay far, far away and create in wild new conceptual areas, that will ensure whatever you're doing is new, is the next thing.

Oh, and I would pick up a copy of Kind of Blue and listen to it if you never have. Really amazing.

The "Esses" of Success: Sex, Subversion, Style.

Malcolm McLaren, the inventor of the Sex Pistols, said that. I would call those the esses of any awesome ad campaign as well. Think about all the great campaigns from the last 5, 10, hell 50 years. They all have each of those esses in spades.

Good luck thinking this weekend.

Creativity According to Galifianakis

"To do something very dumb in a clever way or do something clever in a very dumb way."

I like that quote. I also like the Absolut stuff he and Tim and Eric did. Check it out:

More Mary

“…the advertising was just simple and catchy and corny enough to stay fixed, enticingly, in your mind, it wouldn’t let go of you. That’s what branding is supposed to do.”

“The advertising business is a dangerous business, there are no guarantees. It’s not for sissies. It’s a business about creating miracles… Since the beginning of time it has been the fanatics who have created the miracles…”

I love Mary Wells Lawrence.

One Show Deadline Extended

Don’t drop your stuff off to Lee today. We don’t need to send it in until next week. The One Club has extended the deadline to next Friday, Feb. 27.

I told you the One Club are a bunch of morons. Leave it to them to tell us the DAY BEFORE IT’S DUE that they’re extending the deadline.

Anyway. Go take a nap or something. Then revisit your campaign with fresh eyes for the first time in days.

More later. ADDY time.

some random ideas for urban legends surrounding horseradish.

Longs horseradish is made so naturally that it has been known to cause female cats to start lactating and become possessive of the bottles of horseradish, guarding it as if it were one of their very own young.

Longs is hot enough that when mixed with whiskey and swallowed, it will cause a reaction that will result in a temporary state of fire breathing.

The ingredients of Longs Horseradish is so pure that priests have been known to use it to perform exorcisms, purging the possessed of all unclean spirits.

The grater used by longs to make their horseradish is the design of Leonardo da Vinci. It was the a lifelong project he worked on relentlessly in secret, resulting in very few finished paintings. The result is a one of a kind grater that can out perform any modern day machine.

To Be Done A F T E R One Show

Hi All,

A friend and former employee of TRG has asked me if I know anyone who can design a logo for her husband, who is running for Dallas city council:

The name 'Yourse' is interesting, is it not?

If any of you are interested, give me a shout. The website is currently unfinished. They're just starting up.

toe jam

hmmm nice art direction.. not sure why this exists though ;0)

Lunch. Talk. Clown.

Lady and gentlemen,

It has occurred to me that you might appreciate some office hours during our preparations for The One Show. So beginning immediately I will donate my lunch hour every day to anyone who wants to come downtown (or equidistant from Kiran's office and TM) to talk about campaigns/ideas/vague thoughts.

Don't think of these sessions as ways you can GET ideas. If you meet with me/us, you better have done the required thinking/work beforehand so we can give you feedback. This is your project, geniuses. Not ours.

Email us if you want to get together. We've always made ourselves available for hungry types. And we like the dollar menu.
