Beer and Course Evaluation

Guys, I have a problem. Maybe you can help me.

I forgot to have you do the Student Course Evaluation. This is the second semester I've done that. So unless you want me to be fired (your vote doesn't count, Rebecca), please help.

Here's the deal: if you guys come down to UCD and fill out these evaluations sometime this week, even tonight if possible, I will gladly buy beer for anyone who shows up. Should take only a few minutes.

Let me know. I know Mkuki's thing is Wednesday, **CORRECTION** so why don't you come to UCD just before and fill out your forms and then walk over to Pearl? **CORRECTION** I would do it Tuesday, but I've got a rehearsal that night.

If you want to come on your own sometime and just meet me at the agency, we can do that too.

Lemme know. Again, thanks. I'll try to give as many of you as I can parking passes for the garage also. Come to the blog and vote for the day.

Thanks. Really appreciate it.

CONGRATULATIONS!

From London

Just ate the second Fish & Chips plate of my stay, followed by something called the Eaton Mess (strawberries, cream and a meringue), for dessert. My hotel window overlooks Hyde Park. And it hasn't been as cold as I'd expected. So things are good.

We're working on the sound design for the spot with a guy called Johnnie Burn, at Wave. He has a wall full of D&AD pencils. I'm tempted to steal one. We also looked at initial renders of the CG on the spot...tons of work yet...we have our hands full.

I wish all you guys a great review. Many have made large leaps in the last week or so, and I'm thrilled by that. Make sure you get your stuff together in time for the internships and the Addys. We need to own the Addys again, and I see plenty of work that can make that happen.

That's it for now...remember to have fun...think your presentation through...don't apologize for your work...have your answers ready...and accept criticism graciously, not with a lame cop-out. Think of this as a lab for the real world.

Make us proud.

Afterward

Any thoughts on where to go following the review for a drink or three? Preferably an establishment that doesn't get too crazy on a Friday night, and where the douchebag factor is low/non-existent? In Dallas, that might be impossible to find. But I welcome suggestions.

Lakewood Landing?

Tipperary?

Whatever works.

Critique Info

Hi Geniuses,

We will not be having a final class period this week. We felt that you could better use the time to work on your ads before the portfolio review on Friday.

So what that means is this: you must, must, must send us your work before Wednesday, in PDF form. Please don't make it huge. I wouldn't want my email account to be disabled because 10 students send me 100 10mb Acrobat files in 10 hours. Extra credit for anyone who figures out that word problem.

Again, you M U S T send your stuff before Wednesday. Preferably early on Tuesday. (Because Kiran is leaving for London Wednesday.) Then you'll have a day and a half to make necessary adjustments before you start boarding your stuff up.

Another thing I must ask of you: use your own judgment to get your campaigns where they need to be. Don't send us something we've already commented on but you haven't changed. That only wastes our time--and anyway, the period for hand-holding is over. Our remaining comments in the next 36 hours are going to be short and sweet. You're going to have to take personal responsibility for your work to make it ass-fuck-balls great.

So.

Drop off your finished, cleanly mounted work (on standard 15x20 black art board) at 10 a.m. on Friday at my office. 10 A.M. AT MY OFFICE ON FRIDAY. Go up to the 20th floor, and there's a wonderful woman named Claudia there who will take it for you if you tell her what it's for. Mentioning my name might be a good idea since I doubt she's ever heard of A&M-Commerce.

Then at 6:30 p.m. at TM Advertising that same day I will take whoever is in the lobby upstairs to begin the review. If you come late, don't bother coming up. If you can't make it to your final review on time, then you don't deserve a passing grade in this class. Camp out at UCD or in the lobby if you have to. Don't try to get down here during rush hour. Some douchebag $30,000 millionaire with his B'mer will get in a wreck on whatever road you choose to take, back up traffic for miles and ruin your semester. In years past, people have met at a coffee shop or restaurant nearby (read: across the street) at least an hour or even two hours early and just waited it out there so there was no chance they would be late.

I hope that's clear. Just to reiterate: you're dropping off your work earlier than the actual review on Friday so we can have people at the agency, including our professional critique guests, look at it before the 6:30 p.m. review.

Email me if you have any questions.

Good luck,

bd

A Rollercoaster Love Affair With Coffee

Click here to check this out. Something like this could get you a job. Seriously. It isn't ads, but it's awesome, and it's a hell of a concept. Interesting, readable, unique, human.

Plus it's appropriate: I have a feeling much coffee (or Red Bull?) will be consumed among class members in the next 9 days.

my 4 year olds creative restless mind

Such detail in the art. I mean, that monster has 3 eyes, teeth in his mouth, a thought bubble coming out of his brain and five fingers on each hand!
I was impressed with his drawing, but I was less impressed with were he chose to create his masterpiece. Namely on the couch! Why? Well, he says it's because he found a pen under the cushion when he was napping...

He also loves to draw envelopes. He loves to draw the lines like the back of an envelope, turn the paper over and write random letters on the front, draw a stamp and stick it in the mailbox.

Progress.

Thought I'd post a teaser of what I worked on Sat. & Sun. This is for the Sigg Bottles. This fish made completely out of plastic bottles and tops. I wanted all the animals to start from just a plain plastic bottle so it looks more like a bottle rather than the animal. Squid, and a whale coming up. Now, back to skates...

The Lastest Assignment on Earf.

Hi all,

I have... drumroll... the final assignment:

Those of you who had Veet: you get White Rock Skate Center.

Those of you who had the baby monitor: you get Highland Park Pharmacy.

The assignment is one poster/outdoor board. If you want to do more, or your idea lends itself to multiple executions, knock yourself out.

Questions? Comments? Witty anecdotes? I highly suggest you visit the place first.

See you Tuesday! I still want to see 21 ideas. Can you do it? I bet Jacob can.

some changes

Please let me know what ya think....

BTW the last image one here is just to show how large the images I work with are. This one I posted is at HALF size of what I work with! It allows me to get more detail, and never worry about resolution when I print.
Also because I am such a sucker for process, I have included the original raw untouched photos just for interest.

Some Student Books You Should Look At.

Here are links to some books from VCU. These people are now working in Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, L.A. and New York.

Which should give you hope, because you guys can do this kind of stuff.

I think the only big difference you'll see is the "360-degree thinking," for lack of a better term. These guys are trained to think up huge ideas that can work across all platforms--web, print, outdoor, guerilla, you name it. Some books you have a hard time finding any "ads" in them--it's the thought that gets creative directors excited these days. Well, that and kick-ass executions.

Anyway. Here you go.

Tim Gordon (now at Droga5, NYC)

Latasha Ewell (now at Publicis in the West, Seattle)

Diana Brost (now at CP+B, Boulder—TM offered her a job on my recommendation)

Kirsten Klieman (now in Chicago—TM offered her a job too, on my reco, which she spat on)

Michael Collier (now in Detroit—he turned down a TM offer, too. Hmmm. Seems to be a pattern here of young, hungry, talented people eschewing Dallas for some strange reason)

Stock. Stock. Stock.

For anyone struggling to find (cheap or free) stock.

Cheap stock:
StockExpert
iStockPhoto
Fotolia
Dreamstime
SnapVillage
Photos.com

Free stock:
StockVault
ESP
FreeRange

Also, PhotoLibrary has full res watermarked images for download and the watermark is (usually) easy enough to brush out.

I've also found that using another search engine, rather than google, can get different results. Try altavista, yahoo, dogpile, msn or any other reputable engine for your image searches. They all use slightly different meta search algorithms, yielding different results.

Flickr ain't bad either.

Please add to the list if you have other useful sites!
