my 4 year olds creative restless mind
Such detail in the art. I mean, that monster has 3 eyes, teeth in his mouth, a thought bubble coming out of his brain and five fingers on each hand!
I was impressed with his drawing, but I was less impressed with were he chose to create his masterpiece. Namely on the couch! Why? Well, he says it's because he found a pen under the cushion when he was napping...
He also loves to draw envelopes. He loves to draw the lines like the back of an envelope, turn the paper over and write random letters on the front, draw a stamp and stick it in the mailbox.

Progress.
Thought I'd post a teaser of what I worked on Sat. & Sun. This is for the Sigg Bottles. This fish made completely out of plastic bottles and tops. I wanted all the animals to start from just a plain plastic bottle so it looks more like a bottle rather than the animal. Squid, and a whale coming up. Now, back to skates...

The Lastest Assignment on Earf.
Hi all,
I have... drumroll... the final assignment:
Those of you who had Veet: you get White Rock Skate Center.
Those of you who had the baby monitor: you get Highland Park Pharmacy.
The assignment is one poster/outdoor board. If you want to do more, or your idea lends itself to multiple executions, knock yourself out.
Questions? Comments? Witty anecdotes? I highly suggest you visit the place first.
See you Tuesday! I still want to see 21 ideas. Can you do it? I bet Jacob can.

some changes
Please let me know what ya think....
BTW the last image one here is just to show how large the images I work with are. This one I posted is at HALF size of what I work with! It allows me to get more detail, and never worry about resolution when I print.
Also because I am such a sucker for process, I have included the original raw untouched photos just for interest.

Some Student Books You Should Look At.
Here are links to some books from VCU. These people are now working in Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, L.A. and New York.
Which should give you hope, because you guys can do this kind of stuff.
I think the only big difference you'll see is the "360-degree thinking," for lack of a better term. These guys are trained to think up huge ideas that can work across all platforms--web, print, outdoor, guerilla, you name it. Some books you have a hard time finding any "ads" in them--it's the thought that gets creative directors excited these days. Well, that and kick-ass executions.
Anyway. Here you go.
Tim Gordon (now at Droga5, NYC)
Latasha Ewell (now at Publicis in the West, Seattle)
Diana Brost (now at CP+B, Boulder—TM offered her a job on my recommendation)
Kirsten Klieman (now in Chicago—TM offered her a job too, on my reco, which she spat on)
Michael Collier (now in Detroit—he turned down a TM offer, too. Hmmm. Seems to be a pattern here of young, hungry, talented people eschewing Dallas for some strange reason)

Stock. Stock. Stock.
For anyone struggling to find (cheap or free) stock.
Cheap stock:
StockExpert
iStockPhoto
Fotolia
Dreamstime
SnapVillage
Photos.com
Free stock:
StockVault
ESP
FreeRange
Also, PhotoLibrary has full res watermarked images for download and the watermark is (usually) easy enough to brush out.
I've also found that using another search engine, rather than google, can get different results. Try altavista, yahoo, dogpile, msn or any other reputable engine for your image searches. They all use slightly different meta search algorithms, yielding different results.
Flickr ain't bad either.
Please add to the list if you have other useful sites!

The worst day at an agency still beats the best day a bank ever had.
Not sure who to credit this to, but the quote rings true every day spent inside a small cubicle, surrounded by some of the best people you will ever meet in your life. Some days I wanted to jump out the window, and others, well, they are spectacular. I truly will miss the years at Targetbase and look forward to new opportunities on the horizon. I should have shared this before, but hey, it kinda slipped my mind.
So, we had this standee, a cardboard replica of Bob the Builder. Leftover from the days of HIT Entertainment, a huge client before my time. Bob had been a staple for a long while, and had a lot of adventures around the creative department. A few of the guys in the studio even used him for target practice. We had a huge Christmas gifting party and there were a ton of Nerf guns, superbadass Nerf guns, that were exchanged. These guys sealed the gun casings and modified the darts with lead tips. You couldn't even see these fuckers flying through the department. The darts easily punctured right through Bob and even left scratches on the windows. They could have killed somebody, fo' reals.
A month or so ago, Bob made an appearance on the front lawn. Apparently he was looking for his lost Labrador Retriever (who was actually spotted on the lawn, the previous day, and ended up being returned to his rightful owner).
Then, the unthinkable happened. Bob was kidnapped. Holy hell broke loose. We were calling the building manager, the front desk, nobody knew what happened to Bob. Then came the missing posters. (I might have had a hand in these and I have to credit Jennifer Cowan as the copywriter). Within 10 minutes, Bob showed up near the stairwell with one of the missing posters stapled to his chest.
Someone, at another agency in the building, had kidnapped Bob during the lunch break, and after seeing the missing posters we put in the elevators, felt so bad, they had no choice but to return Bob to it's rightful owner, the 5th floor.
Many good times were shared, yet, sometimes it's a good thing to move on. There are plenty of opportunities out there for us, the crazy creatives. I hope you get to relish in yours.

Vespa-Stop for nothing.
Me likey.
If you've never been to Rome, know that there is a huge Vespa population (and other motorini) that buzzes around the Eternal City. They will zip right through traffic, up to the front of every line. It looks like a motocross race when the light changes and they are all gunning for the hole shot. They are also known to use the sidewalks and have no problem squeezing through the narrow passages of a sidewalk café. I even saw one squeeze between two cars moving at 15-20 kilometers. The driver of our car had something to say, but my Italian is not so good. Mama Mia, lots of fun to watch.
Bummer there's only two executions, I'd like to see more. Here's the other.

One Show College Competition 2009
For those that are planning on taking art direction next semester, you need to start downloading the brief for the One Show. We go right into it, and only have one month to do our ads. The client for this year is Long's Horseradish.
One Show College Competition
I highly recommend downloading the creative brief and reading it.
They also have a blog where you can ask them questions, and you can see other students already getting a head start.

Obama-mania!
Newspaper front pages from all over the world the day after Obama was elected.

Keep an eye out for a book by Callie Shell. She's a photojournalist for Time that has been following him on his campaign trail for the past 2 years. If you've never seen a picture of President-Elect Obama doing a pull up, check out her photo gallery.
A cool set of Obama Dingbats.
And, if you want to keep tabs on the transition of the new administration, visit change.gov.
